Summary

During the annual Belgrade Bioinformatics Conference in Belgrade from 8-10 June 2026, researchers presented presented and discussed their latest research.

Our colleague Kim Tang presented as an invited speaker challenges and insights in federated learning in healthcare across Europe based on learnings from the Europe Horizon BETTER project.

In particular, challenges regarding distributed sensitive patient data and institutional governance and sovergeinty requirements were presented alongside the PADME platform as a solution leveraged in the BETTER project.

Further, challenges with data harmonization across institutions and data FAIRness were elaborated and the deployed ETL pipeline and metadata catalogue in BETTER were highlighted as possible solutions.

Lastly, challenges of governance compliance and algorithmic transparency were tackled and perspectives to address these challengs in the future were outlined.
