Overview
Summary

From 9–13 February 2026, BullNet’s second training week in Zurich brought together PhD candidates, academic partners, and industry experts for focused sessions on high-throughput sperm analysis, hands-on practicals, and networking. Two of our candidates from the University of Cologne, Ahmad Abu Dayeh & Abdul Rehman, returned with fresh insights, new collaborations, and inspiration for their research directions.

Bringing the BullNet Network Together

The second BullNet training week was a compact, energizing mix of lectures, practical workshops, and industry engagement. Over five days we explored the latest methods in high-throughput sperm analysis, attended targeted talks from domain experts, and took part in hands-on sessions that translated theory into practice.

Industry Perspective

A valuable part of the programme was the industry visit, which gave direct insight into how research outcomes can inform breeding practice and operational workflows. Many thanks to our hosts, Swissgenetics, for a generous and informative visit to the breeding organisation.

Lecture: “LLMs Demystified”

On the academic side, Hajira delivered a clear, well-structured lecture titled “LLMs Demystified”, which introduced large language model use cases and explained how these systems can be applied—responsibly and effectively—in research settings. Her talk prompted practical questions from the doctoral cohort and useful discussion about integrating LLMs into research pipelines.

Presenting and Networking

For my part, the week was both productive and enjoyable. I presented my PhD work and received positive feedback on my presentation skills — a welcome sign that our internal PhD seminars have helped me prepare for wider audiences. I was able to develop new collaborations, exchange contacts for data acquisition, and refine plans for upcoming experiments. Outside the formal programme we had a lively moment trying hurling — an excellent team-building experience that brought everyone closer and a welcome break from lab talk.

Looking Ahead

Training weeks like this are important: they build technical skills, align expectations across partners, and create the professional connections that make multi-centre research possible. We return with clear actions, new collaborators and renewed momentum for the next phase of BullNet’s work.
