As the Horizon Europe Shift-Hub project officially reached its successful conclusion by December 2025, we are taking a moment to look back at its achievements.
Shift-Hub was established with a clear mission: to create a pan-European network that bridges the gap between technology providers, healthcare organizations, and patients. By fostering a Smart Health Hub, the project aimed to successfully accelerate the adoption of digital solutions, ensuring that the next generation of healthcare is more integrated, efficient, and patient-centric.
The Biomedical Informatics Institute (BI-K) of the University Hospital Cologne has played a pivotal role in this journey. BI-K’s contributions focused especially on one of the project's most dynamic components: the Shift-Hub DemoDays.
Recognizing that great technology needs a stage to be understood, our team at BI-K was responsible for conceptualising, designing and organizing these virtual, online showcases. The DemoDays weren’t just webinars; they were interactive, high-stakes environments where innovators could demonstrate real-world applications of their technologies to a global audience of stakeholders.
What we achieved through the DemoDays:
- We scouted and selected cutting-edge Smart Health solutions to ensure every demo provided tangible value
- We offered a platform to allow for seamless technical demonstrations and live Q&A sessions with experts
- By bringing together developers and clinical practitioners, we facilitated the ‘feedback loop’ necessary to move prototypes into practice.
The Legacy Continues: Future DemoDays
While the official project lifecycle has concluded, the momentum we have built is too valuable to stop. We are thrilled to announce that the DemoDays shall continue!
The Biomedical Informatics Institute (BI-K) is committed to maintaining this platform within an appropriate institutional setting, ensuring that the Shift-Hub community continues to grow and have a dedicated space for knowledge transfer, technology validation, and networking.
Stay tuned for upcoming sessions as we evolve this format to meet the changing needs of the digital health landscape.
We would like to thank all our partners and the European Commission for the opportunity to contribute our expertise in biomedical informatics to such a transformative cause.

Our strategic commitment to sustainability and continuity
The decision to design and organize the Shift-Hub DemoDays exclusively as an online format was neither incidental nor merely a response to digital trends; it was a conscious, purposeful, and deliberate choice. This approach was driven by two core institutional objectives:
Ensuring Long-Term Continuity: By moving away from the logistical dependencies and high costs of physical venues (catering! People needing to physically travel to the event, …), we created a lightweight, agile, and scalable model. This digital-first approach taken ensures that the DemoDays can seamlessly continue in an appropriate institutional setting after the project’s formal completion, unaffected by the geographical or financial barriers that often halt post-project initiatives.
Minimizing Ecological Impact: We were committed to keeping the total environmental footprint of the DemoDays as minimal as possible. By eliminating travel and physical infrastructure, we significantly reduced resource consumption and waste generation.
In every stage of the design, we were guided by a strict efficiency principle: No waste of money, no waste of time, and no waste of human or natural resources without purpose. This philosophy allowed us to maximize the impact of the DemoDays while remaining committed to our responsibility toward environmental and fiscal sustainability.
